Walter Saunders was born in Durban in 1930. From 1967 to 1975 he was co-editor (with Peter Horn) of Ophir poetry magazine and later (with Lionel Abrahams) of Quarry. In 1975 Bateleur Press published a selection of his poems, Faces, Masks, Animae. He has taken part in two exhibitions of paintings (mainly watercolours).
After twenty years in the English Department at UNISA, he became professor of English, first at the University of Venda, then at UNIBO. He retired in June 1991 and is working on a long poem about the fall of Troy in a new epic metre, and on a series of abridged and modernised versions of Shakespeare's plays (for Centaur Publications).
