Along the way, Hans is given a tiny book hidden inside a bun, telling of a sailor shipwrecked in 1842 on an island inhabited by living playing cards, a nested story that turns out to be entwined with his own family's fate. The book won Norway's Critics Prize for Literature in 1990.
