Souvenir is set in a late twenty-first century South Africa, where human clones are commonplace, the effects of global warming are everywhere evident, and the socio-political order has taken some unexpected turns.

As a result of the unpredictability of the climate, society is both more and less rigorously governed than it is today. Survival is the key, and this includes the survival of neighbourliness, family life, and love.

Souvenir Petersen is a barbiclone, a blonde beauty. In her attempts to evade the prejudice and disrespect accorded clones - the main ethical issue of the day - she opts for a solitary occupation. As a service mechanic of wind generators, she flies from job to job on isolated farms. She whiles away the quiet evenings with the old diary of an artist who had also travelled the karoo, leaving her unique mark on the landscape.

Souvenir is befriended by a family in the Tanqua Karoo and meets an itinerant lepidopterist, Obed Will Obenbara. A series of freak storms devastates the southern Cape, and Souvenir and Obed Will join forces to journey to the coast to see for themselves the cause - icebergs, detached from Antarctica, floating offshore.

Thus begins an unlikely relationship, established despite the bizarre circumstances in which they find themselves.
