The story revolves around the Brandt and Le Seuer families. Burma and Sebian have grown up together, discover adulthood, then their paths separate as they are caught up in the crossfire of their wilful natures and the sweep of events as the British Army invades the Orange Free State and Transvaal Republics. The Boers now wage guerilla warfare. A placid lifestyle is totally destroyed, the republics are devastated and the Boer nation is torn apart by death, sickness, starvation and treachery. It is a story of pride, but mostly about endurance and survival.
