By (author): Robin Pedley. Educationalist Robin Pedley's 1963 Pelican paperback was his most influential book, credited with popularising the idea of comprehensive schools in Britain at a time when only about 5% of secondary schools had adopted the model. Pedley argued against the grammar-school system, which he saw as producing "segregated education," advocating instead for comprehensives as a route to social integration and support for disadvantaged pupils, and favouring smaller, community-rooted schools over large all-age institutions.
