The Mansion completes William Faulkner's trilogy of the Snopes family, after The Hamlet and The Town, and is set in his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, in and around the town of Jefferson. The novel is told in three parts, "Mink", "Linda" and "Flem", through the voices of Gavin Stevens, V.K. Ratliff and Charles Mallison. It traces the downfall of the Snopes clan, a post-Civil War family that took control of Jefferson within a single generation: the story that began with the murder of Jack Houston ends with the murder of Flem Snopes, as Mink Snopes, released after 38 years in prison, comes to settle his score. Along the way Faulkner takes in the Southern economy after the Civil War, rural populism, and the racial and social tensions of the South. First published in 1959.
